Oakham Mens first continue success + Open Day and American Tournament news

OAKHAM TENNIS TEAMS AND GENERAL
MEN SHOW THE WAY
Skipper Justin Fowler was absent from the men’s 1sts when they hosted a Leicester club team who are lower in the division than the Rutlanders. Dan Potter and Jack Hubbard wasted no time in establishing their intent to win as did Gordon Reekie and Richard Breag. Both pairs are well versed in seeking out their opponents weaknesses and exploiting them. This was to be no exception as they won rally after rally and forced errors from all corners of the courts, with Reekie and Breag losing only 8 games through the match.
3rd strings Greg Delaney and Peter Farrar fought hard to gain the upper hand and were unlucky not to get a point in their tight matches.
Result – 6-3; played 7, won – 3; points – 43.
Away to Newton Lindford next week.
Edmund Dry is still smiling as his side begins the second half of their season. He produced changes to his team, but they came home worthy winners.
They went to Rothley with a newcomer – teenager Owen Davis who partnered Ken Stewart. They worked well together and Owen will have gained much from this encounter.
Skipper Dry and Paul Ashfield have become a hard pair to beat as they battle their way through opponents. Peter Farrar and Gordon Smith also kept up the pressure to win all 3 rubbers.
Sitting 2nd in their division, Edmund knows promotion might still be on the cards with 3 remaining matches, but it will be a close finish and only 1 team goes up.
Result 6-3; played 5, won 4; points 41.
LADIES 1sts
What a frustrating season for the Ladies 1sts who have had 3 matches rained off. They went to Market Harboro’ with a slightly rearranged side but were able to pull off an important 6-3 win.
Captain Debbie Powell – who always leads from the front – worked hard with Jane Wood to keep a clean sheet. Margaret Miles and Carolyn Davies provided a very steady new pairing and were able to win all 3 rubbers. Jane Gilmore and Anne Boyce were unlucky not to get a point from the tie-break they had.
Result – 6-3, Played – 4, Won – 2, points – 22.
They now have more than half of the season still to play and are hoping for much fairer weather.
LADIES 2
Skipper Mel Jarret has had to rearrange team members as injuries have taken their toll. She found a team to go to Enderby and Hinckley and although neither team won, the matches were well contested and enjoyed.
The team is sitting in the middle of the league with 2 matches remaining. Mel has been able to introduce new members to the side – giving them experience of leagues when they are still quite new to or returning to the game after several years away.
Played – 6, won – 3, points – 35.

AMERICAN TOURNAMENT
The club held its 2nd American Tournament on Friday after the rain and the winners were Ken Stewart and Louise Grewcock. Runners-up were Heather Cooil and Geoff Clyde. It was a fun evening but every point was competed for until the eventual winners were declared.
