ABOUT OAKHAM LAWN TENNIS CLUB

The ‘Lawn’ part of the Club in our name refers to the early days of the Club, in the 1920s, when two grass courts were made available to the people of Oakham, when the single grass court in the Castle grounds became overgrown. The current Club was formed circa 1952 and all weather surfaces were provided in the 1970s. We had a fourth court added in the late 1990s and the new floodlighting has been available since 2014.
We try to be a friendly Club providing open access to all those who wish to play tennis, regardless of age or abilities.
We have resident coaches who are available to provide both individual and group coaching at all levels. Please contact Dan Potter initially (contact details under Committee Members) to see if you can benefit from any of the available coaching.
Our separate court is also available to members of the general public, who have to book to gain priority over the Members, who have first call on the facilities. (Bookings can be made through Dan Potter: 07834 470940 or email on: djpotter2@hotmail.com). The use of the floodlights is free to Members and the procedure for booking and usage, which has time constraints, is on the Clubhouse notice board.
We offer ‘mix-in’ sessions (as shown on the Schedule on the notice board), where any Member can simply turn up, be assured of a warm welcome and join in and play. Juniors may join in these sessions also, if they have reached an appropriate standard (which is to be determined by the coaching staff). Courts at other times can be booked by placing your name on the ‘white board’ on the back of the door of the Clubhouse.
We organise various social events throughout the year and are always looking for new ideas and volunteers, so if you can help … do contact any member of the Committee.
The Club has several teams in local leagues, catering for men, ladies, mixed and veterans. If you wish to be considered for a team place, please contact the Match Secretary who will put you in touch with the relevant team captain. Also, the Club organises internal competitions for both adult and junior members and more informal tournaments for all, details of which can be found on the Clubhouse notice board.
The Club is registered with the Lawn Tennis Association as a member of the Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Association. As a consequence, we do operate some Club Rules to ensure that the facilities are kept up to standard and that everyone can enjoy their tennis in a safe environment. A full set of the Club Rules is displayed on the Clubhouse notice board and the following rules apply to everyday use of the facilities:
1 – If you find a problem, please record the details in the Defect Report Book (which is kept in the kitchen in the Clubhouse).
2 – The courts are open to the elements and so each player should make their own decision about whether it is safe to play or not. Please avoid playing when the courts are frosty, have standing water or if exceptionally hot conditions make the playing surface soft.
3 – Please do not take chairs onto the Courts and ensure that you leave the nets down after play and leave the courts in a clean and tidy condition.
4 – Members may invite guests to play up to a maximum of four times, and should sign in their guests in the book provided in the kitchen in the Clubhouse and pay the Honorary Treasurer a guest fee of £5 for each session.
5 – Children are welcome, but must be supervised at all times. Please ensure that if your child is receiving coaching, then you should make the coach aware of your arrival and hand over of the child, and that you are available in good time to receive the child at the end of any coaching session.
6 – If you believe that you will be the last Member to leave the premises, then please ensure that both the Clubhouse door and the external gate are closed.
A First Aid box is available in the kitchen in the Clubhouse and contains limited resources to deal with minor injuries. Please report any shortages in the Defects Report Book. Remember that tennis can be a dangerous game, so please take care!
If you should have any complaints about any aspect of the Club, then do draw this to the attention of any Member of the Committee, and we will try to deal with the matter as expeditiously as possible. A formal Complaints Procedure is provided on the Clubhouse notice board.
We hope that this provides you with all the information you need to become a member, but if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask any committee member (names are on the notice board).
We look forward to welcoming you to the club.
The Committee.
